Aeration is a process of opening up cores or hooks of soil to allow your lawn to breathe and more!! Compacted soil or thickly layered thatch, restricts air, water, nutrients & oxygen from entering your soil, and this leads to turf disease and an unhealthy environment. With compacted soil and heavy thatch, the grass roots have no open spaces to grow, your fertilizer, lime and other amendments can not do their job, because they can not penetrate below the surface where they are needed!!
Aeration is best done in Connecticut in the Fall when our cool season grasses are growing, and the spring and summer weeds are not germinating. For a healthy lawn treatment , we aerate & dethatch, if needed, in the fall, followed by fall fertilizer, lime if needed, compost and overseeding!!
